The buying decision

Review the agreement’s service period, payment obligations, renewal language, cancellation process, and record handoff terms before hiring. Contract terms vary by provider; a monthly payment alone does not tell you whether you can cancel monthly.

Identify the commitment

Ask whether you are purchasing a fixed project, an annual package paid in installments, or an ongoing subscription. Confirm the total obligation, start and end dates, renewal notice, and fees that remain due after cancellation. Ask the provider to explain ambiguous provisions in writing.

Define completed and unfinished work

Request milestones and a description of deliverables. If the relationship ends, ask what has been completed, what remains unfiled, and which deadlines still need attention. Do not assume that paying an invoice means a return was filed or a planning action was implemented.

Plan the record handoff

Identify the returns, depreciation schedules, elections, financial records, correspondence, and other materials the next professional needs. Ask about format, secure transfer, and access to your client portal after the engagement ends. The agreement should explain the provider’s handoff process.

Avoid a deadline gap

Before ending an engagement, confirm who is responsible for imminent filings and payments and obtain written acceptance from a replacement professional where needed. This guide describes buying questions, not legal conclusions about a particular contract. Seek appropriate professional advice if there is a contractual dispute.

Apply this to your AE proposal

Ask AE to identify the entities, years, deliverables, implementation support, and filing work in your proposed engagement. Review current published fees and confirm exclusions in the agreement. General website content does not establish that a strategy applies to your circumstances.
