The buying decision

A fee is easier to evaluate when the engagement separates setup, recurring service, implementation, and filing. Ask about additional charges before signing. A separately disclosed service charge is not automatically a hidden fee.

The first-year cost checklist

Check document review, bookkeeping cleanup, entity formation, payroll setup, prior-year amendments, multi-state filings, specialist studies, and rush work. Ask which are required for the plan to be usable and which are optional. A planning quote can be accurate while excluding several services you still need.

Annual renewal versus payment installments

A fee paid monthly may be installments on a fixed project or a subscription that continues until cancellation. Ask for the total contract price, service period, auto-renewal terms, notice deadline, and treatment of unused meetings. Do not infer the contract type from the payment amount alone.

Complexity triggers

Ask how additional entities, rental properties, K-1s, states, employees, or transactions affect fees. If a provider publishes a starting price, request the reviewed price after submitting your actual scope. Confirm who can authorize more work and whether the firm supplies a written estimate before beginning.

Example of a useful written confirmation

Request a statement such as: This price covers the listed entities and years; preparation of the listed returns is separate; cleanup is estimated separately and requires approval; no renewal is required unless a new engagement is signed. The exact language should reflect your agreement, not a generic promise about every provider.

Apply this to your AE proposal

Ask AE to identify the entities, years, deliverables, implementation support, and filing work in your proposed engagement. Review current published fees and confirm exclusions in the agreement. General website content does not establish that a strategy applies to your circumstances.
