Identify the change before choosing a filing year
An amendment review begins with a specific error or omission: missing income, an incorrect filing status, an eligible deduction, a credit or a corrected information return. Compare the filed return with source records and quantify the proposed change. Do not assume every earlier year is available for a refund.
For an individual federal refund claim, the general filing deadline is the later of three years after filing the original return or two years after paying the tax. Early-filed returns are generally treated as filed on the due date. Exceptions and payment lookback rules can change the result.
Separate the filing deadline from the refundable amount
A timely claim does not by itself establish the amount recoverable. The refund is also subject to rules limiting which payments fall within the applicable lookback period. Extensions, payment dates and special circumstances need to be reviewed using the actual record.
Create one row for each tax year with the original filing date, extension, tax payment dates, proposed adjustment, supporting documents and calculated refund deadline. Obtain account transcripts when necessary to verify filing and payment history.
Reconcile entity and individual returns together
A business return correction may require revised owner reporting and related state amendments. Review carryforwards across subsequent years so the same deduction or credit is not claimed twice. Partnership corrections may require an administrative adjustment request rather than a conventional amended return, depending on the applicable regime.
Depreciation errors also require procedural analysis. An accounting method change can be relevant in circumstances where simply amending a prior return is not the correct solution. The procedure should follow the facts, prior treatment and applicable rules.
Prepare an amendment package that a reviewer can trace
Gather the filed federal and state returns, all schedules, original and corrected information returns, payment evidence, relevant invoices and a clear explanation of each change. Keep a reconciliation showing original amounts, corrected amounts and the difference.
Ask AE to evaluate both eligibility and economics through a return review call. The outcome should identify supported changes, missing evidence, filing procedures, deadlines and expected federal and state effects. A refund estimate remains provisional until the complete return is modeled.
