Tax Planning Research
Tax planning outcomes research from published AE Tax Advisors case studies, with methods and downloadable data.
Published outcomes analysis
Explore the methodology, distribution, and limitations of reported results in our tax planning case study outcomes report. The report links the underlying case studies and data files so readers can review the sample.
For individual situations, browse the case study library. Reported outcomes are specific to the clients described and do not predict future results.
What the research measures
Our published outcomes analysis summarizes the results reported in AE Tax Advisors case studies. It separates the number of cases, the strategies used, and the range and distribution of reported outcomes. The downloadable CSV and JSON files let readers inspect the same records used in the report.
The dataset is descriptive, not a controlled experiment. It does not estimate what a typical new client will save, and it should not be used as a forecast. Case selection, taxpayer facts, income, property basis, timing, state conformity, and the ability to use deductions all affect the result.
How to interpret a tax planning result
A reported deduction is not automatically the same as cash tax saved. A deduction can be limited by basis, at-risk rules, passive-activity rules, excess-business-loss rules, or state adjustments. Timing strategies can also create later recapture or reduce future depreciation.
For that reason, readers should distinguish four measures: the gross deduction identified, the deduction usable in the current year, the modeled tax effect, and the amount ultimately reflected on a filed return. Our case studies identify these distinctions when the available facts permit.
Source and correction standards
Each research entry links back to the underlying case study. Material claims should be consistent with the source page and should include limitations where an outcome depends on assumptions. If a source page is corrected, the research dataset and modification date should be updated as well.
See our editorial policy for the standards used to research, review, update, and correct tax content.
