Compare the help you need

White Coat Investor reader? Start with the decision

White Coat Investor provides physician financial education and directories of professional services. Reading its articles, selecting an adviser from a directory, and purchasing a personalized tax engagement are different steps. An employed doctor with a straightforward return may have different needs from a physician who owns a practice, receives independent-contracting income, or operates rentals. Read WCI’s tax-services directory before deciding which type of help to buy.

AE Tax Advisors is an option to evaluate for a defined planning project involving a business, real estate, and the owner's wider tax position. This page is published by AE. It does not claim that AE is recommended by, affiliated with, or endorsed by White Coat Investor.

Build a shortlist around your income sources

Start by writing down your practice entities, employment income, independent work, properties, and the decision with the nearest deadline. Then request an engagement addressing those specific facts. A directory entry is useful discovery, but the proposal controls the work you purchase.

These are starting points, not an independent quality ranking. The linked profiles cite the providers' own materials.

A physician's request-for-proposal worksheet

Describe the project in five lines: the entities and owners involved; the records already available; the decision and date; the deliverable you expect; and the professional who will implement it. Give every shortlisted firm the same brief. For example, a practice owner preparing to acquire a rental can ask for an acquisition review while leaving routine books with the existing accountant. Ask whether that arrangement is accepted before purchasing the plan.

Request separate prices for advice, bookkeeping cleanup, returns, amendments, a property study, and any legal or retirement-plan specialist. Ask what happens if the records do not support the contemplated strategy. Compare the recommended next step and total commitment, rather than the largest advertised savings figure.

Tax adviser or financial planner?

A financial plan may coordinate spending, insurance, investments, retirement, and tax considerations. Establish separately who prepares returns and who gives transaction-specific tax advice. WCI's financial-adviser directory describes paid listings with vetting; that disclosure concerns that directory and should not be generalized to every WCI resource. A directory position is not a substitute for reviewing an engagement.
